A Declaration of the True West, 1.0

Friends of the True West! Do kindly read this and give me ANY feedback that occurs to you before it’s set in stone (or steel plate actually – for printing as an etched-embossed poster, version 1.0). Here is the digital poster of the draft, and the text below it in case you want to copy and paste and edit to repost or share – all I ask is add to the end ‘modified by’…. and your name and contact. Or if you love it as is, share freely! Comments welcomed too, for me to look at modifications. I want to put something out there that focuses on the common ideals of the Western culture, not on all that falls short in so many ways as we all know it has and does – hence ‘The TRUE West’…

The text:

A Declaration of the True West

Stand strong against the encroaching barbarism, all who honour these things:

FREEDOM – Individual freedom of all thought and action except to harm others unjustly.

DEMOCRACY – A belief in collaboration with other free individuals to create, declare and operate companies, districts, states, republics and nations.

JUSTICE – One law for all, democratically framed and improved to always protect the rights of every person.

OWNERSHIP – The right to profit from the creation and trading of goods with other free individuals.

DYNAMISM – Enthusiasm to change things, and oneself, for the better.

TRUTH – Recognition of a non-material reality which may be explored and elucidated by the mind. The sum of This reality we call the Ground of Being, God, or the One.

NATURE – A belief in Laws of Nature and their discoverability. A respect for Nature as an ordered whole within the One.

HISTORY – A belief in the progression of all things from a beginning to an end. We can learn from the past and shape the future.

LEARNING – It is better to know; ignorance is not bliss.

REPENTANCE – An acceptance that human fallibility requires us to often turn back, change our mind, reform.

LOVE – A desire that all our transactions be guided by appreciation and respect for all things and persons.

BEAUTY – An acceptance that pragmatic goals must be balanced with the pursuit of romantic beauty.

DEFENCE – Of our rights, property and lands. The courage to die for these values, these friends who honour them.

  1. Hi Peter;

Anna saw a common theme in our concerns; good initiative, here are my suggested edits:

    Declaration of the True West

Stand strong against the encroaching barbarism, all who honour these things:

FREEDOM – Individual freedom of all thought and action except to harm others unjustly.
    or:
We evolve when we set individuals free to fulfil their potential where it does not harm others.

DEMOCRACY – A belief in collaboration with other free individuals to create, declare and operate companies, districts, states, republics and nations.

    Or:

Humanity’s organic collaborative desire to fulfill its potential through the formation of companies, districts, states, republics and nations.

JUSTICE – One law for all, democratically framed and continually improved to always protect the rights of every person.

OWNERSHIP – The guarantee of the right of individuals to profit from the creation and trading of goods with other free individuals.

DYNAMISM – Enthusiasm to respond to change for the better.

    Or:
Our commitment as a species to avoid mistakes of the past and reach for an optimal future.

TRUTH – Recognition of a non-material reality which may be explored and elucidated by the mind. The sum of This reality we call the Ground of Being, God, or the One.

    Or:
Commitment to following what we know to be true and to change opinions in harmony with our expanding understanding of reality, whose sum we may call God.

NATURE – A belief in Laws of Nature and their discoverability. A respect for Nature as an ordered whole within the One.
    or:
Acceptance of our context within the natural world and trust in its laws as a guide to our actions, including our duty to be harmonious with nature.

HISTORY – A belief in the progression of all things from a beginning to an end. We can learn from the past and shape the future.
    or:
A vision of our reality as a solid shape through time which we are connected to in the past present and future.

LEARNING –bravery to choose understanding over ignorance despite pain it may bring.

REPENTANCE – An acceptance that human fallibility requires us to often turn back, change our mind, reform.
    Or:
A commitment to turn away from those things we know to be wrong.

LOVE – A desire that all our transactions be guided by appreciation and respect for all things and persons.
    or:
Valuing the power inherent in the appreciation and respect for all things and persons.

BEAUTY – An acceptance that pragmatic goals must be balanced with the pursuit of romantic beauty.
    or:
A commitment to dance with the ratios and proportions of the natural world and an appreciation of their power to lift the human spirit.

DEFENCE – Of our rights, property and lands. The courage to die for these values, these friends who honour them.
    or:
An understanding that a willingness and commitment to fight for those things we know to be right is a component of peacefulness.

  2. Hi Martin! Thanks for a long and detailed rewrite – I’ve read through once and will read again after lunch when more brain cells may be firing 🙂 Initial thoughts are: I want the declaration to be clear and unapologetic – any ‘apology’ as in Socrates’ Apology, social contextualising, softening, interpretation, social translation, can be attempted elsewhere. No declaration can hope to be its own explanation and detailed defense against misinterpretation or emotional reactions by all the various groups/schools of opinion, paradigms… let alone religions of course! So for example the last heading, Defense: your rewrite is I think a softening for thse who believe ONLY in Peace, never war – but I would argue strongly that while yes technically defense is a component of peacefulness, it is not essentially peacefulness; quite the contrary: in itself it is fierceness, rejection of the aggression, a martial spirit (when in the right) that would not appear peaceful at all to the aggressor. Imagine for example a mother bear defending her young… Imagine too the English on the beaches when Hitler’s hordes tried to land…

    1. Hi Peter,
No worries, I wrote it all pretty quickly and it is not intended as a rewrite so much as a spare parts dump for you to consider. I basically aimed for increased solubility.
With regard to peacefulness, my point was that a peacefulness is a desired state but one that is meaningless without a willingness to be violent – the essence of gentlemanliness.
I did not take the time to consider other categories, but one that occurred to me later was personal responsibility.
Good effort getting this much-needed manifesto together. I have been concerned over the casual denigration of all things western for some time.
As Jordan Peterson said about the odd collaboration between post-modernists/neomarxists; it is an unfortunate meeting of a masochist with a sadist:
      “We don’t deserve to exist.”
      “We agree.”

      1. Hey thanks – that is all helpful.. yes responsibility is the flip side of freedom…and so true about the casual denigration…and I will go over it again before setting the declaration 1.0 into steel (literal) boilerplate! Also working on the possible logo of the True West. . Another and more dangerous project will be to do a Declaration of the Untrue West… a kind of satire of those casual cosseted denigraters and ingrates…the cultural relativists who virtue signal over hijabs and think all beliefs are equal, who march against trump but not against radical Muslims who throw acid in women’s faces… Hm yes maybe we could collaborate on that Declaration? 🙂 I did want to start with the positive first though…light a candle rather than curse the darkness…
